Subsequently, the newsroom was the first to speak to the doctor at the center of allegations about high rates of hysterectomies at the privately run immigration jail in Georgia. In startling accounts, some women have charged that the surgeries were undertaken without their informed consent. This in-depth reporting led to an investigation of the Irwin County Detention Center. In May 2021, the Department of Homeland Security announced they would be shutting the controversial detention center down.
